Gaining wisdom from 9/11

I've always believed that it's not the disasters in life that define you, but how you react and what you do afterwards.  On this day when there are so many memorials and tributes to remember those we lost on 9/11/01, I keep thinking that we should have done more to unify ourselves as a nation and increase security through understanding and tolerance.   Our local paper had a great quote:

"In the end, the fittest tribute to those who perished lies not in glittery office skyscrapers or well-intentioned memorials. It lies in making the tough but smart decisions on how to respond better to such crises on their behalf, without incurring more major loss of life and losing our moral compass."  - Ruben Rosario, Pioneer Press

So my question is - "What are we doing to make the world a better place post-9/11?"
